Power & Love

I suppose Celine Dion got it best when she sang her hit song "The Power of Love." :-) But without exposing my secret excitement over Celine Dion songs, we can discuss something much more powerful than what Mrs. Celine could ever sing about.

We rarely associate power and love. Some people even think of the two as opposing forces. After all, if you are to love something, you cannot impose power on it. We can think of power as something that is negative, or hierarchy driven. Love is a choice and a delight, whereas power is something imposed on us.

I can see how the two cannot co-exist. But what happens when they do. There is a portal that can be opened when we receive power. This power is a worthy pursuit.

"And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge -- that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God." - Ephesians 3:17-19

Paul prayed that we have the power to grasp God's love. Before I continue -- For those of you who have no concern to experience the fullness of love, the rest of this blog will be meaningless. If you haven't battled the hell of not knowing love, then just wait for the next blog post :-) - just a friendly word of caution.

It makes sense that just being rooted in love is not sufficient to know the depths of God's love that would fill us with His fullness. Everyday, we choose out of the fullness of God. However, we still can be rooted in love. Just because we do wrong, does not mean we are separate from love. Some of us are loved dearly and base our entire lives on love - but we may never experience the breadth, depth, width, height, and other dimensions that we haven't humanly quantified yet. Most of us base our faith on love - and this is excellent - but we are so easily satiated with the love we know - perhaps even with the love we want.

But isn't it crazy to think that God's love is beyond the love we even want? Isn't it remarkable to fathom that there is more love - more fullness - greater mysteries of our own hearts that can be touched - and healed - and fully formed. I believe that God does not love us to contentment. He loves us to eternity. He loves us towards the definition of love. Our humanity cannot contain his love. He loves beyond this galaxy and outside the universe. This love cannot be assumed, simply because our family and friends love us - and simply because we pray every single day. This love requires a power. This love requires divine power to even enter into that 'other-worldly' love. The love that is fiery. The love that overextends. The love that breaks powers and principalities. This infinite and full picture of love is appropriate to desire - it is for our taking - it is for us to hold and grasp.

I believe with all my heart that 99% of Christians have not experienced this love. I believe that most Christians take what they can get. I believe they place their own parameters on love and base their understanding of God's love on these parameters. I can't blame these Christians - I am one of them. However, if we can receive the power to go beyond and experience a rich fullness, then we must attack it with everything we have. God's love is not just when you get that perfect job. God's love is not just when your friends adore you on your birthday. God's love is not just the compassion of a mother. God's love is not just the laughter of children. We love to say it is so that we can say we've experienced it. But this can't be - there has to be something more.

The something more requires power. As we pray for love, we must pray for power. Love is the most powerful force our humanity can experience - so it makes sense that it requires power to create it - to understand it - to better love others and ourselves. May the power of love be in you - May power be given to you to experience the depths, height, breadth, and width. May we experience love & power - together. May we never quantify God's love - May we just pass it on for the next person to receive it. Peace, and much love to you - Jeevo.
